Address:The Paediatric First Aid Award aims to give the candidate knowledge and assess them on their ability to deal with emergency situations, how to recognise and respond to serious medical conditions and serious injuries.
The course includes training on adult, child and infant resuscitation manikins, the contents of first aid boxes and the recording of accidents and incidents. This course meets the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage.
Who should attend
The Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF) qualification has been designed for those who have a specific responsibility at work, or in voluntary and community activities, to provide first aid to children and/or babies.
• An emergency situation
• Chronic or sudden paediatric illness
• Paediatric injury
This qualification fulfils Ofsted’s first aid requirements for early years teachers, nursery workers and childminders (as defined within the Statutory Framework for Early Years Foundation Stage 2014 and within the Child Care Register Guide).

Course Overview
Unit 1: Emergency Paediatric First Aid – Day One
Unit 2: Managing Paediatric Illness, Injuries and Emergencies – Day Two
The content of the course covers:
- Understanding the role of the paediatric first aider
- How to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally
- How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is suffering from shock
- How to assess an emergency situation and act safely and effectively
- How to provide first aid for an infant and a child who has a foreign body airway obstruction
- How to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and breathing normally
- How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is wounded and bleeding
- How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with a suspected fracture and a dislocation
- How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with a chronic medical condition or sudden illness
- How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with burns or scalds
- How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with a head, a neck and a back injury
- How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is experiencing the effects of extreme heat and cold
- How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who has been poisoned
- How to provide first aid to an infant and a child with conditions affecting the eyes, ears and nose
- How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who has sustained an electric shock
- How to provide first aid to an infant and a child who has been bitten or stung
Course Duration : 12 hours ( 2 Days)
Assessment Process
Continual assessment by the tutor
Complete a worksheet during the course
- Demonstrate the ability to carry out CPR on an adult, child and infant manikin
- Demonstrate the ability to carry out first aid for an unconscious casualty
- Demonstrate the ability to carry out first aid for a child in an emergency situation
- Demonstrating Underpinning knowledge by Multiple Choice, Work Sheets or Question & Answers
Qualification Expiry/ Requalification
How to re-qualify:
Qualification is valid for three years, In order to re-qualify, learners must be assessed against all learning outcomes and assessment criteria in the unit. For Paediatric First Aid this will be the same as the initial course of 12 hours
